I'm planning to make a proper k&jdrama post today, but in the interim, have this.
suburbannoir and I are currently watching
Athena: Goddess of War. It's the sequel/spin-off/they couldn't get Lee Byung-hun again of
IRIS, Korea's most expensive television show and possibly the biggest reason I'm foraying into the world of Korean dramas and like to
have flashbacks to things I did five seconds ago.
Anyway, we're up to episode ten and nothing has happened. Like, nothing. Sure, they're running around being spies, and Cha Seung-won's hair is threatening to take over the universe as he sits on chairs menacingly - but I swear, we've watched almost ten hours of TV and the best thing that's happened is that time
The Good and Old Guy went and danced at a Russian nightclub.
Oh, and this. Basically, everyone walked away from
IRIS rooting for the North Koreans, mainly because they are a bunch of BAMFs who should have had sex with everyone. In
Athena, we get to meet one of their former agents, Ki Soo. So far, he's wandered around being ~zany~ while discharging weapons randomly and running a mahjong casino dealio. We're convinced he's supposed to have some sort of redemption, but like I mentioned, not much has happened in the show as a whole, so don't expect any character development just yet.
In episode six, some shit was happening, before we cut to Zany Mahjong Casino Dealio. Seems there's a high roller who's doin' somethin' shady, so Ki Soo drags him into his office and demands he plays a card game with him. The game is simple: Shady Bloke will pull one card, Ki Soo'll pull another, and if Ki Soo has the higher number card, he gets to punch Shady Bloke in the face. I can't explain any clearer than in caps and bold:
THIS SCENE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING. NOTHING. NADA. It's almost beautiful in its absurdity.
Just watch, and marvel:
(no subs because you get the idea - Shady Bloke is screaming to stop, then swaps the rules of the game so he pulls the lower card etc etc)
Crying. With laughter. Because IT DOESN'T STOP. Then it cuts back to the ~spy action~ and
is never mentioned again.
That's why, ladies and gents, I love kdrama and everything it chooses to be.
EDIT: Oooh SBS are quick. If the video is not working, just bare with me as I try to by-pass the man.
EDIT EDIT: Let's see how TinyPic takes it. Bless you, YouTube, and your endless fight against people sharing media. Bless you.
