AUGIE MARCH / Stranger Strange
I'm not waiting for the hammer to fall
I'm not waiting for anything at all.
Whether it's canon or fanon, the idea of Goren never sleeping and always thinking is predominant. In this track, Augie March manages to create an urban lullaby without even evoking the city below - a quite world, where Goren watches from his window and wonders what the hell he's doing here in the first place; in face of his mother, of his partner, of his slow descent into madness/old age/whatever, there's that one moment at night, around 2am, when he just is.
{02}
HAWKSLEY WORKMAN / It's a Long Life To Always Be Longing
Is the measure of a man
How much love he can fake?
There's always a lot of Hawksley on these fanmixes, because I honestly think he's tapped into Goren's mindset in a lot of his tracksand he's perfect in everyway. Fluid and languid, this track sums up Goren's view of Eames - his thoughts about her as a person, as a partner. The only thing that stands between him and happiness, with anyone, is the overwhelming desire to do right by everyone and never himself - and it's almost like he can't, or if he did, he'd lose something in the translation. This song is so freakin' heartbreaking, I just want to die thinking about it.
{03}
THE BEATLES / When I'm Sixty-Four
Yours sincerely,
Wasting away
QUESTION: Could you ever see Goren and Eames apart? ANSWER: They were for a bit, when she had the baby. And it sucked.
QUESTION: Would Goren ever leave Eames alone, anyway? ANSWER: Nope. He'll still be calling at 64, asking where his copy of War and Peace is. "Under the fridge, holding it up, Goren."
{04}
CORDRAZINE / I Never Cared Before
I'm too old to leave
Much too young to know
A song for the ages. Cordrazine only ever brought out one album before they broke up, but it as close to perfect as one could be. A track for Eames - logical, dry, level-headed Eames, who, once, was a woman in a marriage with hope and dreams and princess fantasies, until Joe's untimely death. Where does that leave her now? With an emotional wasteland as the closest thing to a partner and a helluva lot of pent up emotion. From a 'shippy stand point? A total first, best kiss song.
{05}
CHRIS ISAAK / Speak of the Devil
Watching her walking
Like watching a flame
One for Nicole Wallace. Sure, she's the most overused character and plot device since Rambaldi, but with more sexual tension and blonde hair. Fics like to exploit the idea of a big fat love triangle between our duo and Ms. Wallace, and sometimes (just sometimes) it sparks the imagination enough to think "what if?"
{06}
PHOENIX / Run, Run, Run
Contradictions get me
Everything I want
Run, criminals! Run! A gen song. Is that allowed on a 'shippy CD? Do I honestly care? Phoenix rule!
{07}
SCALA & KOLACNY BROTHERS / With or Without You
On a bed of nails
She makes me wait
Goren likes churches. He tends to get all melancholy and emo in them. So, here's The Best Love Song Ever Written, sung by a choir and sounding like it's in a church. Perfect! Seriously, Scala take a romantic staple and make it so heartbreakingly perfect for Goren and Eames, I just want to weep. Both empty and full at the same time, it's just perfect perfect perfect.
{08}
JULIAN LENNON / Take Me Home
I'm scared of being lonely
And of dying without love
The lyrics alone in this song, when applied to our favourite dysfunctional detectives, would be enough to convince any non-'shipper that even a snowball could have a chance in Hell given the right circumstances. TRUFAX: Olivia D'Abo sung on "Help Yourself", the album this track is from. You learn something new everyday!
{09}
BECK / Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes
Change your heart
Look around you
A Hymn for a Crime Scene. Slow-mo, go!
{10}
BETTER THAN EZRA / Mercy
So, suffer
Neither one giving in
Two very different people working together for the common good - expect some fireworks. And they don't disappoint - thanks to Season 6, we're seeing Eames finally sticking her hand in and it's fan-bloody-tastic.
{11}
LORI CARSON / Fall in the Light
In all this trouble
Hold on
Originally written for the Strange Days soundtrack (featuring Mr. D'Onofrio), I was obsessed with this song when I was younger because of the pure beauty of it. Sure, it's dated a little now - love those 1990's beats - but it still holds up as a genuinely beautiful song about wanting, waiting and being.
{12}
MONEYBROTHER / They Are Building Walls Around Us
It seems that I fell out of luck into the
Outstretched arms of fuck up, I know
Manic and elevating, a track of pure whirlwind to paint a better picture of what it must be like to work with Goren on a daily basis. But underneath it all is a geniuine joy - I see investigating montage, how about you?
{13}
SUPERTRAMP / Logical Song
Wont you please, please
Tell me what weve learned?
Oh, hello. HAY GOREN AND EAMES, I think Supertramp wrote a song about you guys. OKAI. And it's a freakin' awesome song and you just know Goren plays it on repeat. On record. While dancing. In the squad room. Dig that air sax, Eames!
{14}
HAWKSLEY WORKMAN / In My Guilt, In My Fear
I'll pretend I'm healthy
Everything's just fine
With Hawksley, it's all about the lyrics. He's channelling these characters, I swear.
{15}
Kt TUNSTALL / Miniature Disasters
Coz it's a hindrance to my health
If I'm a stranger to myself
Finally, a track that sums up Alexandra Eames to a tee. All her contradictions, stressors, worries, loves and joys - Kt's managed to jam them into one song that paints our tiny little detective with such delicate strokes, you'd think she actually did write the song for inclusion on this mix-cd. A perfect companion to "Little Tragedies", no?
