It warms up as the episodes go on - Eames is basically a background character in the first season. I should cobble together a list of eps for you to watch.
It's a lot easier to watch than SVU, to be honest. I think because it's more of a procedural and there's no overt emotion or deliberate pushing of emotional buttons. And Goren's a hoot.
