Musik Poste: "May God's Love Be With You - Songs for Dani Reese"
I am so in love with Dani Reese, it may actually become a problem in that you're going to get bombarded with famixes and fic until you all yell "JESUS, PIECES, ENOUGH!"

Each song comes with a drabble-esque scenario, and covers Dani from her addict days through to now. I would suppose there's a little bit of ambiguous Dani/Charlie, but that's more of if you see it, you see it thing and nothing intentional.
The track "Alma" by Teddybears is an instrumental, and brings to mind the character of Alma Garrett-Elsworth from Deadwood, which isn't unintentional.
I hope I've done her justice - such a character deserves a nice treatment in regards to fanworks, so enjoy.

{1.}
TEGAN & SARA | Where Does The Good Go?
What do you say it's up for grabs
Now that your on your way down
Everyday is a new one, but it tastes like the old ones. Dani puts on her shirt, her pants, her badge; finally looking in the mirror and back at the faceless man she left behind in the bed and the coughing laughter that comes from the mouth of a drunk almost bubbles over into the new, untouched day. As she leaves the hotel room, she knows she wishes she hadn't looked back, because it just gives her the idea to do the whole thing again.
{2.}
THE SUPERJESUS | Gravity
Hanging on to you
I never thought I'm killing someone
"You wanted to shoot him." "Yes."
Because it was the junkie lover that made her lose her faith, it was the bastard who'd watched her shoot up in the bathroom of some swanky restaurant then kissed her like they were husband and wife and not an undercover cop and the criminal she was trying to catch. And sometimes, she sees Charlie Crews looking at her like that when he thinks she doesn't know, and it kills her more than watching her lover being pulled to prison did.
{3.}
FRIENDLY | Some Kind of Love Song
You make me feel nasty
Like an out of control freak
It's Monday morning. The curtains are closed, Dani can't feel her arm. Shadows dance across the pushed-over television set that lies in a puddle of old clothes and junk stuff. She wants coffee, or to use, or to be useless. She doesn't know. It's Monday morning. It's the last day of the first year of her life.
{4.}
THE AUDREYS | Oh Honey
Oh don’t you sing like that to me
Please don’t sing all dark and low to me
Legs held close, skin taught against rough sheets. A flip, a turn, a change of pressure that pushes a moan from chapped lips and nothing, nothing changes except tomorrow they have to play pretend again.
{5.}
BLUE OCTOBER | Overweight
Pull my hair back
Look me in the eye
Dani remembers the day she finished rehab. Her father picked her up, and told her how much she looked like her mother before taking her to the diner they'd had lunch in every Sunday after church. He's gotten whiter and heavier and she knows she's freshly scrubbed like she's twelve years old again. As they eat pecan pie and coffee that's sat in a pot for hours, her arms feel heavy from track marks but her brain is so clear, she sees her father in the light he should have always been seen in.
She smiles at him and pretends she's okay, because her mother would have wanted it that way and she's her mother's daughter after all.
{6.}
MATTHEW GOOD | A Long Way Down
You know it's a damn shame
The sun don't shine underground
She's spent too long looking down the edge of addiction. Her desk feels weird, even though it's the same, the shape of the chair foreign against her ass. It's like learning to live again, with a new red-haired partner and the strange looks in everyone's eyes as they track her walking across the squad room to get used to; but she will and part of her wonders if those looks were always there, she was just too far under to pay attention.
{7.}
IRON & WINE | Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car
Like a snake within the wilted garden wall
I'd hint to her every possibility
She likes coffee, that's the first thing he noticed. She's got a slight curve to her back from hunching down from looks and accusing glares, and the messiest hair he's ever seen on such a beautiful girl. She's beautiful, yeah, he noticed that, with strong hands and tight man-style pants as if she's playing at androgyny but the shining light from inside her gives the whole game away. She's rough as nails and smooth as silk and a million different metaphors and indexes, like an angel rescued from hell even though the playground down there was so much better than the one up here. He eats an apple, and decides to make her laugh, because she's got so much more of that inside her than the darkness she tries to pretend is all.
{8.}
BERNARD FANNING | Elly
You get to play the cool hand
With the dice
Give me a moment, she'd asked. So he held her together as they walked down the stairs and all at once, she felt like a proper, strong woman for the first time in her life.
{9.}
VAST | Dirty Hole
You can live as long
As you want to live
When she got to the bottom, she expected her fingernails to look dirtier, her hair filled with more split ends. When they both reached the bottom, and the fucker laid over her feet high as a fucking kite with some Joe's blood under his perfect fingernails and his hair out of place but still like a GQ cover boy, as he tried to point her own police-issued weapon at her head, Dani Reese fell out of place and into the arms of the police department she was subconsciously trying to hard to avoid.
{10.}
FEIST | Honey Honey
Do you think he'd come back
Would he come back
They lean against the front of his ridiculous muscle car, drink drinks and eat eats while looking out LA spread in front of them. She's probably not used to the quiet, he thinks, as she slurps her Big Glup loudly against nature. He doesn't want to say a word, about the horrible case they're working on or something that's stemming in his brain, so he takes in her profile taking in the city below, and it's suddenly quiet in Crews and Reese's world.
{11.}
TEDDYBEARS | Alma
Instrumental
Walking in the front door is always the hardest time of the day and the sound of the clock against an empty house the ugliest sound of them all.
{12.}
HAWKSLEY WORKMAN | The Woman is the Water
Baby you flow
You know you flow
She's pretty certain Crews is on some sort of mission to annoy her through Zen. The way he pulls those ridiculous faces at her, over their desks, the way he offers her inappropriate fruit at inappropriate times and the way he breaks into 1980's power ballads to prove some sort of point she's not even sure is important.
The way he tells her the light's reflecting through her hair, or her cheeks are rosy today or the way she holds a pen is graceful - it's like he's learning life again, or teaching her, or both of them at the same time and it's frustrating and confusing and ultimately makes her smile under it all like a crazy woman and it's that that makes her rosy and light-reflecting and she hates him for it.
{13.}
JOSEPH ARTHUR | In The Sun
I picture you fast asleep
A nightmare comes
It's Monday morning, and she wakes up alone. The curtains are open. She puts on the coffee pot, does her makeup and puts on her clothes, badge and gun; she leaves the house, the new day tasting like minty fresh whitening toothpaste and Crews is waiting for her out on the street leaning against his car and talking to a neighbour Dani's never even said hello to.
It's Monday morning, and there's an element of faith in the day already, and she decides to go with that for now because it's a little more perfect than any other day she's had this week.

an angel rescued from hell even though the playground down there was so much better than the one up here.
I so very want that on a t-shirt or an icon, because...yeah.
He eats an apple, and decides to make her laugh, because she's got so much more of that inside her than the darkness she tries to pretend is all.
That reminded me of how over the 8 eps we've seen, their bickering has gotten less geniunely hostile and more like they're both getting something out of being smart alecks and snipping at each other.
And sometimes, she sees Charlie Crews looking at her like that when he thinks she doesn't know, and it kills her more than watching her lover being pulled to prison did.
Sigh. Poor woobies, the both of them. Is it canon or fanon that she fell into bed with her mark? Also, I love the idea that she senses Charlie feels something, and it terrifies her. Iget the sense, both from canon and from this fic, that Reese thinks she's a cancer that will destroy anyone she gets close to. Hence the anonymous one-night stands. Plus, maybe just scared/anguished by the knowledge of how Charlie feels because she's terrified of feeling something, of losing some of that hard-won control.
it's like he's learning life again, or teaching her, or both of them at the same time and it's frustrating and confusing and ultimately makes her smile under it all like a crazy woman and it's that that makes her rosy and light-reflecting and she hates him for it.
Aaaawwwwww. Just aaawwww.
nothing, nothing changes except tomorrow they have to play pretend again.
Out of curiosity, who's she with here? I assumed it was one fo the random married guys, but "they" has me puzzled.
It's Monday morning. It's the last day of the first year of her life.
pitch-perfect. And not too sappy.
Crews is waiting for her out on the street leaning against his car and talking to a neighbour Dani's never even said hello to.
It's Monday morning, and there's an element of faith in the day already, and she decides to go with that for now because it's a little more perfect than any other day she's had this week.
They CARPOOL. And he talks to her neighbours, and seeing him makes her happier, even if she'd rather shoot herself in the head than admit it.
Two tiny nitpicks, one a spelling error. In drabble #4 it's "taut" rather than "taught." In #10 you mention her doing her make-up, which pinged me wrong. Obviously they put stage make-up on the actress, but the character very rarely looks made up at all. Occasionally it looks like she's wearing lipstick, but mostly she seems to go au naturel.

Can't stand Connie, though. I've always liked my heroines to be gutsy, tough-as-nails women. Unlike Connie who's clingy and playing games and all 'oh, hold me, Charlie!' (I was nauseous while I watched that scene). I get that for years, all they had were each other. But like Charlie said, he needs to live in the present, the 'now'. And Charlie's 'now' doesn't really have a niche for Connie.
Anyway, I went google and found your site, and am I SO, SO, very glad I did! I love reading your posts about Life. And was really excited when I found out that you had fanmixes. Unfortunately, the Dani fanmix and Donna De Lory song are no longer available on Sendspace. Was wondering if you would be so kind to upload them again for me? If you can't, that's alright. Thanks in advance!
no subject
Thank you for your words - here's the mix again, sans the Donna De Lory track as I seem to have misplaced it. Huh. hxxp://www.megaupload.com/?d=R06KX1HB
Re: Connie. I completely agree. She seems to be a complete contradiction of everything they're trying to do for Charlie - having him look towards the future and not the past. Luckily, after what I have read about the new season, she may not be a big part of the picture, if at all. Fingers crossed! (I feel terrible for writing that, but she really is superfluous.)

I'm reading your Life fics right now and they are just amazing. Please don't stop writing for this series. I love your Dani. I love your Charlie too, but I think I love your Dani more. You KNOW her and every time I read your fics, I feel like I'm peeking at what goes on in her head. Every action she does (in your stories) rings true.
And you have tempted me by writing Roman/Dani. Ack! Must not cross to the dark side! Must not cross! Must stay true to Charlie/Dani! *chants*

Second: YOU HAVE AN INSPECTOR LYNLEY MOODTHEME OMG I LOVE YOU!
Third: This was brilliant the music choices I know of and the fic, oh my god the fic, it is fantastic. The drabble for "Some Kind Of Love Song" is just perfect and amazing.
She's rough as nails and smooth as silk and a million different metaphors and indexes, like an angel rescued from hell even though the playground down there was so much better than the one up here. He eats an apple, and decides to make her laugh
Has to be one of the best lines ever. I love the contradictions listed in the first sentence, and then the contrast in the actual format of the prose itself, it is beautiful.

2. YOUR APPRECIATION OF MY MOODTHEME AND LYNLEY MADE ME EXPRESS MYSELF ONLY IN EMOTICONS: ":D :D :D"
3. I'm not tres gut at compliments, so I'll just say thank you and distract you with music link again. Thank you. LOOK, MUSIC!
(Re-reading the drabbles though, I kinda wish I'd made them a bit longer. The world needs more Dani fic, more!)
