Fanmix: Wake and Be Fine | Songs for Tessa and Steve
Do you guys remember Murder Call? Australian cop procedural with a noir kick that ran on Channel 9 from 1997-2000? No? *proverbial crickets*
Welp, I do. Based on the Tessa Vance novels by Jennifer "Emily Rodda" Rowe, it was the sister program of sorts to Water Rats. Rats was, at the time, an exceptionally popular cop show that was pretty much responsible for shaking up the Aussie TV industry's perceptions of what an Aussie procedural could be, as it was as slick as American shows (well, kind of) - but with a home-grown edge. Murder Call wasn't a direct spin-off; instead it was a strange mish-mash of genres that, at it's best was excellent, and at it's worst? Kind of bad, actually. But Lucy Bell and Peter Mochrie as Tessa and Steve - the city girl and the country boy - have such good chemistry that it's worth staying for the whole, odd, bizarre ride.
I loved both Water Rats and Murder Call, with Murder Call easily being the one I had the softest spot for as I grew up. But, like anything in the Aussie TV industry, the show was either too ambitious or not ambitious enough - take your pick - and was cancelled in 2000 only to disappear without a trace. No DVDs, nothing.
Luckily, it's hugely popular in Europe and has been rerun on 13th Street, Universal's pay-TV crime network. I just managed to get my hands on the whole series and yep, detectives Tessa Vance and Steve Hayden are still Baby's First Partnerz OTP. Because, partnerz.
You guys know that means fanmix and bad fic, right? Right.

NOTES: This isn't a particularly literal fanmix, but hopefully it captures the mood of the show. Enjoy!

Ugh, she's amazing. I think I wanted to be her when I was 12, just in general.
If one of those TV Weeks has amazing photos like so:
I will happily take them off your hands :D

I did have a little thing for them. And as always I love my lead women.
Does the show hold up? Part of me wants to see it again...

Lucy Bell is phenomenal. I adore Tessa. Tessa is nuanced and not-perfect and flawed, and her and Peter Mochrie have amazing chemistry. And the core cast stays the same for the entire show - they don't add or subtract people - and I kind of think that helps to keep the show kind of intimate.
...i have a lot of feelings. I can find you some download links?

And definitely interested!

I have to admit, I haven't heard any of these songs, I do know a couple of the artists from previous fan mixes I've downloaded over the years (All different fan mixes).
It's great to find other Murder Call fans out there! It's a shame that after the show ended it wasn't released on DVD... *sad face* but did manage to find it on YouTube, someone had recorded it off 13th Street Universial (whom ever you are, I LOVE YOU!!!!).
I've been watching it a lot over the past 12 months after not being able to watch it for years. Used to be on The Hallmark Channel here in Australia (Austar for those country people and Foxtel for the city dwellers), but I don't know if it still is... Don't have pay tv anymore.
I have to admit that I loved this show and Blue Heelers (those Aussies would remember Lisa McCune as the Coles checkout chick back in the day) and Water Rats, one of the many reasons I wanted to join the police service. I finished my degree in policing but sadly failed the medical 3 years ago *cries* was devastating to get that news after almost 3 and a half years of study, only to have an old injury from an accident 6 years previously (which I didn't get treated! Biggest mistake of my life) come back with a vengeance. So I've had a couple of surgeries to repair the damage in the past year and I'm currently healing from my latest 4 weeks ago, but because one was a spinal injury, they won't take me.
I guess that's just life trying to tell me something, so now I'm studying to become a veterinarian nurse and possibly continue on to veterinary medicine in the future.
Anyway, thanks for the Fanmix share! I hope to see more from you in the future!!!
